Diana Smith, Hostess With Mostest, Takes New Canaan By Storm
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 11:59 p.m. ET New Canaan, CT - Champagne sparkles, silverware glitters, and glamorous guests abandon their limousines for another evening of company, conversation, and entertainment. Maxim’s? Elaine’s? No, it is Chez Smith, the hottest invitation in the heart of Fairfield County, Connecticut, where Diana Smith charms an eclectic group of financiers, lawyers, historians, and the illuminati of New Canaan and environs.
Ms. Smith (“Call me Diana”) greets each guest warmly. Flanked by her beautiful daughters, the trio provide a stunning glimpse of the latest fashions, no doubt prompting more than one guest to wonder, “Wherever did they buy that?”
As bedazzled guests make their way past the kitchen to the living room, they are greeted by Ms. Smith’s husband, the debonair McKeldon Smith. “Don’t ask him about his screen test for the latest Bond film” whispers Ms. Smith, “He is only just barely over the disappointment. But they will be picking another Bond soon enough!”
As newcomers are guided about the graciously appointed interior, Ms. Smith’s role as a docent at the Metropolitan Museum is put on display – her succinct and amusing descriptions of the many interesting ‘objets’ routinely delights visitors.
“Diana has a wonderful time as a docent”, said her husband. “She has regaled grade-schoolers with tales of King Tut and beguiled grad-schoolers with legends of Abe Lincoln.”
The breadth of Ms. Smith’s knowledge and talent is put on full display when guests gather for the highlight of the evening, a game of Charades. This reporter is assured that her clues for the televison series “Friends” was itself a comedy classic, although a more complete description can not be provided in this family newspaper.
How long can Diana Smith continue to host the most fun and exciting parties in New Cannan? Said one guest cryptically, “While there is a dirty, smelly raccoon to be entertained, she will entertain them”.
Her daughter Ann was a bit more forthcoming. “Party on, Mom!” she said as she headed to the library for another night of study.
